By "General Desaix" the French mean Maurice of Saxony, born in 1696 in Goslar as a son of August the Strong and Aurora von Königsmarck, who was also provost of Quedlinburg. Moritz is highly revered by the French and is simply transferred here as a folk hero to the time of the wars of liberation. After his death, the French king decided that Maurice should not be buried in Catholic French soil, but in Protestant soil in accordance with his faith. Strasbourg was designated as the easternmost city with Protestant believers as the final resting place. There the king had one of the most monumental tombs in European art history built for his general Maurice by the sculptor Pigalle in the Protestant St. Thomas Church.
