Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem – Jerusalem Cross in case, Tanfani & Bertarelli, Rome
Gilt and red enamelled decoration in the shape of the fivefold Jerusalem cross, composed of a large guilloché cross with four smaller crosses in the quadrants, finely crafted with gilt-framed edges and stylised ornamentation. Attached to the top is the golden badge of the order, showing a trophy helmet, sword, crossed lances, breastplate, radiant star, and a small Jerusalem cross, mounted on a pleated black neck ribbon. The lid of the case is marked with the embossed inscription “Tanfani & Bertarelli – Oggetti Sacri – Via S. Chiara 37–42 – Roma”, the traditional supplier of sacred insignia to the Papal household since the early 20th century. Accompanied by the original red imitation leather case with gilt-embossed Jerusalem cross on the lid. The cross is in very good age-appropriate condition, the case shows minor signs of age, and faded on the right side of the lid. Dimensions of the cross approx. 64 x 53 mm (HxW), case approx. 30 x 120 x 160 mm (HxWxD).
This order represents one of the highest Papal distinctions, awarded by the Cardinal Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (Ordo Equestris Sancti Sepulcri Hierosolymitani, abbreviated OESSH). The decoration is conferred exclusively for outstanding merit in Christian life, social commitment, and the support of the Church in the Holy Land. Recipients of this prestigious order include high-ranking clergy, nobility, and dedicated laypersons from all over the world.
