The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (Ordo Equestris Sancti Sepulcri Hierosolymitani, OESSH) is one of the oldest and most prestigious papal orders of knighthood in the Catholic Church. It traces its roots back to the time of the Crusaders and exists in its modern form since the 19th century under the protection of the Pope. The order is awarded solely by the Cardinal Grand Master to laypeople or clergy who have rendered outstanding service to the Holy Land, Christian life, and social causes. The so-called breast cross is worn by members on ceremonial occasions and symbolizes their affiliation with the worldwide community of the order. The piece offered here dates from the mid-20th century and was produced by the long-established Cologne workshop Brückershohn, known for ecclesiastical outfitting and sacred insignia. This is an official conferment piece.
