The Battle of Crete in May 1941 was the first major airborne operation in military history and a strategic, albeit extremely costly, victory for the German paratroopers. This medal was not an official military award but a privately produced commemorative piece that could be purchased by participants of the battle as a memento. It is an impressive historical document of this famous military operation.
