Cast iron wall decorations were very popular in the late 19th century, the era of Historicism. The motif of Saint George, as a symbol of the victory of good over evil and the epitome of chivalric heroism, was an extremely popular subject. It reflected the romantic and history-enthused mindset of the bourgeoisie during the German Empire.
