Two Trench Knives of World War I, German & Austrian
Forged steel, wooden grip plates. A pair of authentic World War I trench knives. 1) German Trench Knife (Private Purchase): A typical privately acquired fighting knife used by German soldiers. The blade is single-edged, the grip made of ribbed wooden plates, with the characteristic S-shaped crossguard. Original as-found condition. Length 23.5 cm, blade length 12 cm. 2) Austrian Trench Knife M1917: Official model of the Austro-Hungarian Army. Strong, robust blade; grip composed of two smooth, dark wooden plates fixed with three rivets and an oval crossguard. Original as-found condition. Length 30 cm, blade length 18 cm.
The trench warfare of World War I led to the development of the trench knife as an effective close-combat weapon. While the Austrian Model M1917 was a standardized service issue, German soldiers used a wide variety of privately purchased versions. This pair strikingly illustrates these two different approaches to the same battlefield necessity.
